Pauline Fisher
Volunteer and Treasurer of Friends Committee

In 1994, Pauline decided to do voluntary work in a local hospital. Her time at the scanner centre began with helping with the accounts. At the time she had no idea, that a few years on her daughter would be using the facilities of the Centre. Pauline’s voluntary work now includes financial control of all activities of the Appeals Office. She is also Treasurer of the Friends and does the Centre’s banking.

June Nickless
Volunteer and Chairman of Friends Committee

A golfing accident in USA in 1996 prevented June from resuming a career in the charities sector, so she decided to become a volunteer with the Centre. Her daughter is a Senior Research Fellow in the field of cancer research, which was an added incentive. June has been Chairman of the Friends for many years, supporting the Appeals Teams fundraising activities.

The Friends of Paul Strickland Scanner Centre help our Fundraising staff with all aspects of their work.

Friends push the boat out
Following a successful visit to Watford Palace Theatre to see Shakespeare’s As You Like It in April, 19 Friends enjoyed an elegant feast of opera with dinner at the Grim’s Dyke Hotel, Harrow Weald on Sunday 29 June. The opening act of Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore was performed after the first course. The final act followed the main course, sweet and coffee.

The operetta was performed with gusto and humour, the quality of the singing and costumes overcoming an absence of scenery on a cramped stage, and drawing attention to the cleverness of the words. The ineffable rise of the Lord High Admiral to his position without any experience of ships or anything else is worryingly reminiscent of many people in high places today. Plus ca change, as they say!
