how to prepare for a CT scan

  • The instructions will be described clearly in your appointment letter.
  • All medication can be taken as normal.
  • All diabetic patients are asked to contact the centre prior to the scan.
  • For examinations of the abdomen and pelvis you will be asked to drink up to a litre of fluid in the hour prior to the scan. This helps to identify the stomach and bowel on the CT images.
  • For CT scans of the pelvis you may need to have a full bladder.
  • For examinations of the chest, abdomen and pelvis you may be asked to undress and put on a dressing gown prior to the scan. This will not be necessary if you wear clothes that have no metallic buttons, zips, fasteners etc.
  • For examinations of the head you will be asked to remove earrings, hairclips and glasses.
  • For scans involving intravenous contrast injections you will be asked not to eat for 2 hours prior to the scan.
  • Patients undergoing virtual colonoscopy (also known as CT pneumocolon or CT colonography) have a more complicated preparation. This involves following a special diet for 2 days prior to the procedure and taking a laxative.
