FAQ's
Q. How long will it take?
A. There are lots of types of MRI scans and they take from 15 to 60 minutes.
Q. Will I be seen on time?
A. Although every attempt is made to scan patients on time, delays may occur due to unforeseen circumstances.
Q. Will it hurt?
A. No, it is just noisy, like a drill.
Q. How big are the scanners?
A. The inside is 60cm wide and around 150cm. That's 2ft and 5ft.
Q. What is it like inside?
A.There is lighting and air cooling in the scanner and you can communicate with the radiographer at all times.
Q. Is it open?
A. It is open at both ends and is designed like a barrel.
Q. Will I need an injection?
A. For the majority of examinations, injections are not required. If you are having a soft tissue pelvis scan we will give you an injection in the muscle of the leg. Occasionally it is necessary to give you a small injection in the arm or hand. Extra images will then be obtained. This should cause you no after-effects.
Q. I am diabetic; is it a problem?
A. No, carry on with your treatment as normal.
Q. What if I am nervous?
A. We are very used to helping patients complete their examinations. We have lots of tricks up our sleeves. Where possible, going in feet first helps , as does air cooling, music and talking. Do get in touch with us - we are sure we can help you.
Q. Can I have someone in with me?
A. This is not usually necessary. Current guidelines prevent staff from staying with you but a relative may stay at your side if absolutely necessary and it is safe for them.
Q. What can this scan show that others can not?
A. MRI is a highly specialist test which looks at the body in greater detail. If you have any queries please call us on 01923 844953.
Q. Can I drive after the scan?
A. Yes, should not be a problem. Occasionally if we give you an injection, temporary blurring of vision may occur. We will warn you about this and you will need to make sure your eyesight is back to normal before you leave.
Q. What happens after the scan?
A. Once the radiographers tell you the scan is finished you may dress and go home. The radiographer will not be able to give you the results of your scan. They are read by a radiologist, who then sends the results to your consultant or doctor. This takes 7 to 10 days.
