On 29th June, 116 distinguished guests gathered in a marquee on the lawns at Mount Vernon to celebrate a quarter of a century at the forefront of scanning technology, starting with the vision and determination of one man, Dr Paul Strickland, who saw long ago the life-saving opportunities presented by scanning patients with cancer and other serious diseases. The earlier a patient is scanned, the better the chance of recovery.

For 25 years the Centre has pioneered the use of new scanners and is as well equipped as any in Europe, attracting the highest calibre Consultant radiologists, radiographers and staff second to none in their knowledge and patient care.

Dr Terry Wright, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, opened the proceedings by welcoming Professor Heinz Wolff and other distinguished guests and outlining the achievements of the Centre which will include undertaking the 200,000th scan this year. He introduced Dr Paul Strickland, Founder and Honorary Medical Director of the Centre, who talked in his inimitable way of how it all started.

Dr Wai Lup Wong, Consultant Radiologist and Head of PET/CT, spoke of how accurate cancer treatment depends on accurate and well developed imaging.

Professor Heinz Wolff, emeritus Professor of Bioengineering, Brunel University as guest speaker showed the audience a square jelly made by his wife to demonstrate how a scanner divides the body into visual slices for close examination.

The formal proceedings closed with a prayer of thanks by Rev. George Cobb, Hospital Chaplain.

After refreshments, tours of the Centre were organised to see the MRI suite with the newly installed 1.5T MRI, the CT Suite to see the 64 slice CT scanner and the PET/CT Suite to view the latest PET/CT scanner.
