purpose of a PET/CT scan
A PET/CT scan is a non-invasive, diagnostic, imaging modality that allows clinicians to see if there is cancer present within the body. Although it is not a form of treatment the scan results may be used to modify or influence the type of treatment in order to optimize any therapeutic effect.
PET/CT can be used to :
- Detect and localize cancers in the whole body
- Distinguish benign growths (non cancer) from malignant growths (cancerous)
- Determine how invasive a cancer is (called Staging)
- Assess if the cancer has spread in the body (called metastasis)
- Influence choice of treatment regime, then monitor the response to that treatment and indicate if a change in management is required
